Haunted Houses is about the past within the present, the inescapability of private memory and public history.I found a great comfort in their absurdity’s, traumas and behaviours, the stories of average women are so valuable and I am so excited to read more from Lynne Tillman.

Publication dates are subject to change (although this is an extremely uncommon occurrence overall). Without a strong plot and resolutions, reading Haunted Houses, in parts, can seem slow and redundant. Emily comforted herself with the idea that plots were like skirts, you either did or you didn't use things like that.

Indeed, neither the characters nor their author meet the expectations set for them in their respective roles. It didn’t occur to Emily that Nina and Anna loved each other, even though they were unhappy and sometimes hated each other. Her sentences are concise; they use subordinate clauses sparingly; they’re borne on simple indicative verbs.
