About this deal

In quiet moments, he continues to browse passages from the book which, amongst other things, contain lines on loneliness, death, love and loyalty. The narrator poses a question to the reader to imagine what would happen if you questioned everything about your life and started a new existence. It becomes evident that whatever became of Prado was played out in the shadow of Portugal’s right-wing dictatorship under António de Oliveira Salazar, which remained in place until the mid-1970s.

You could figure out from the context that they were presumably speaking Portugese or sometimes Swiss German, but all you actually heard was English. Included photo within my review is of Peter Bieri, whose pen-name is Pascal Mercier + the image of actor Jeremy Irons as Raymund Gregorius on board the train to Lisbon in the excellent 2013 film version of the novel.

Travel by train from Ávila to Lisbon in a journey of about 9 hours and 10 minutes, or choose the train route from Salamanca to Lisbon which takes approximately 7 and a half hours.

When we talk about ourselves, about others, or simply about things, we want- it could be said – to reveal ourselves in our words: We want to show what we think and feel.

Ich habe die Sehnsucht nach Abenteuer gespürt und bin voll und ganz in Welt des unterdrückten Lissabons eingetaucht. Raimund learns that Amadeu was a doctor, and that only 100 copies of his book were printed after his death. With the book as his talisman, Mundus finds himself boarding the night train to Lisbon on a journey to find out more about its author, Amadeu del Prado - who was this man whose words both haunt and compel him, seeming somehow clairvoyant? Mich hat das Buch bewegt und zur Reflexion über die eigenen Werte und Prioritäten im Leben veranlasst. It’s book that might merit a low score for it’s relative unreadability but I’ve gone for a higher rating as I know it’s a story that will stay with me for some time.

One day the 57 year old divorcee meets an enigmatic Portuguese woman on his way to work, she’s distressed and possibly contemplating suicide. Liebe, Leidenschaft, Sehnsucht, Abenteuer, Sinnhaftigkeit, Selbstlosigkeit, Hilfsbereitschaft, Freundschaft, Aufrichtigkeit. Amadeu's friends were shocked by this, especially Jorge, who at that time was already in the resistance. You can save the train full of hundreds of people by throwing the switch which will send it down another track.Go to sleep in the capital and wake up refreshed in either Toulouse, Rodez, Briançon or Latour-de-Carol. It is less clear why Night Train to Lisbon seems so acclaimed in Europe but not nearly as well regarded in North America.

Night Train to Lisbon - Wikipedia

In Pascal Mercier's third book, a gifted but dull 57-year-old classical languages teacher in Switzerland decides to venture on a life-changing journey after a chance encounter with a random woman and a captivating book. Travelling at night means you won’t lose half a day of your trip – just shut your eyes and you’ll be at your next destination in no time. Geradezu atemlos liest man dieses Buch, kann es kaum aus der Hand legen, bevor den Protagonisten sein Weg nicht wieder dorthin geführt hat, von wo aus er an einem Tag, der zunächst wie zahllose andere begonnen hatte, in ein neues Leben aufgebrochen war: nach Bern.I am not, of course, comparing the very mild form of censorship that Goodreads has recently been practising with the horrors of the Salazar regime.
