Though this is a fictional story, it’s frustrating to know how little some things have changed over the last several decades.Memphis has no shortage of hardship and tragedy as the women and girls contend with challenges in life, but it also shows the power of family bonds and strong community, and has some hopefulness. Joan tries to settle into her new life, but family secrets cast a longer shadow than any of them expected. Brown’s rich descriptions of undersea landscapes, entertaining conversations between Roz and wild creatures, and concise yet powerful explanations of the effect of the poison tide on the ecology of the island are superb. By concentrating, she could make out what the frogs were saying, and that was when she realized their language only had a few words.

This book was so good I texted Shelby during the workday to make sure she put it on hold at her local library. This goes back and forth in time, sharing the stories of the generations that came before in small pieces of time.
