About this deal

Jet or butane lighters are known for working in some pretty awful weather. Windproof and waterproof they can be excellent for hiking and a good option to carry in an emergency. Where it took the BIC 2 minutes on average to start lighting consistently after having been submerged in water, it took the Clipper 1 minute. I was also able to light the Clipper more easily in a slight breeze.

When inserting your refill valve, slight agitation around its circumference may be needed with a razor so as not to damage any wiring present in the interior area of your Bic lighter. Now that your hole has been made larger to accommodate for a boost, make sure you flip over and shake up the lighter so any debris leftover from drilling comes out of its interior area before continuing with the next step. Step 4: You should also ensure your butane container had enough pressure before refilling your lighter and confirm that there was no faulty connection when you filled it with fuel. Does butane float or sink in air? Butane would spill everywhere if you simply pressed the butane canister valve into the hole you created. As a result, you’ll need to add something to the valve to provide a proper seal. Using a drill bit or something similar, you could make small openings into the divider to allow room for your valve and still be strong enough to keep it from collapsing when applying pressure of fuel is added in the fifth step of this process. Step 5:Another option you can go for is the Classic BIC lighter which is a size up from the mini BIC. They can last for a good long time and will run out of fuel before running out of flint. Number 2, the ever reliable Ferro Rod. Instead, its presence will remain suspended near or at ceiling level until something causes agitation of the room’s lower levels—like from airflow resulting from opening a door. Last Word H/T to this reddit thread for giving me the idea for this test, as well as the idea to test a Clipper lighter in the first place.) Reliability Test The most important thing to carry with you in a ZipLoc bag is tinder material. Tinder comes in a whole lot of forms but most common are strips of birch bark, cotton pads soaked in lip balm or dryer lint. Tinder will capture the spark and ideally light up and burn for a few minutes. This will give you the time to keep adding small fuel to eventually a big fire. Yes, it is a good idea to shake the canister of butane before filling a lighter. This will mix up any sediment that has settled at the bottom of the container and ensure that you get a consistent fuel flow into your lighter.

Empty lighters you must buy fuel for and fill yourself. They are refillable and thus may work out to be cheaper in the long-run. The two types of fuel we used were butane for the UCO Stormproof Torch and UST Wayfinder Lighter and Zippo lighter fluid for the Zippo Matte Lighter. (The Mini Clipper can also be refilled with butane.) Type of Fuel: Butane vs. Lighter Fluid Pre-filled lighters are less hassle and cheaper upfront. You don’t have to buy fuel or fill the lighter yourself. Like a lot of gear items in hiking you can buy lighters for any purpose. Fancy Zippo lighters that appeal to the bushcraft community or the mini BIC lighters that are for the UltraLight hiking community. All lighters have a primary function. Being able to create fire. When poking into this opening, be careful not to make puncture any further than needed as doing so could cause an unwanted fuel leak once filled and could also put the lighter into a state of disrepair. Step 2: But should you truly need a weather-resistant lighter, the UCO Stormproof Torch is your best option.

Its compact size is convenient and goes anywhere! Available in a variety of pack sizes and colors.

If you use lighters excessively and need to replace them, you should consider purchasing a refillable lighter.

The Mini BIC is also decently water-resistant. After performing 3 “Soak Tests” with it — submerging the lighter in water, shaking it out, and then trying to light it in 1-minute intervals — it took an average of 2 minutes before it started lighting again consistently. After gaining access to this hole, you will need to widen it so your refill valve can fit correctly inside. When deciding what size drill bit is needed, ensure that whatever diameter tool used should not exceed more than slightly wider than the width measurement taken from previous steps when noting down measurements before drilling begins. In a pinch, a large rubber band would suffice. Cut a tiny hole in the rubber band with your pin and insert the valve into it. Or, if you have a good-fitting rubber grommet, that can work too. Step 4: Now, I don’t mean this lighter doesn’t light consistently. It does. The Zippo was the third most reliable lighter in that regard, lighting 175 out of 200 times. My number 1 favorite lighter to take with me on hiking trips is the humble mini BIC lighter. Can strike for many times and always ready when you need it. BIC lighters are popular for a reason. The Humble BIC mini lighter, beloved by many.

At the base of your Bic lighter’s fuel chamber, there is a rubber divider typically kept in place to keep it isolated and separated from other chambers for extra safety. Unless you need a highly weather-resistant lighter such as the UCO Stormproof Torch, I’d recommend you go with a flint lighter. Butane is both lighter and less dense than air, meaning that it will float in the atmosphere. This can make detecting a butane leak more difficult because it won’t sink to the floor like other fuel vapors. Knowing how to refill a disposable lighter, on the other hand, is a useful survival ability and just good to know.
