Images are a little blurry and overly processed. Videos are compressed to small MP4 files, so a lot of the detail is lost. You can certainly recognise people you know, but it’s a struggle to make out a face clearly if the light is a little dim. That is unless you have some CSI enhancement magic to hand. This isn’t as bad as you might think, though. The camera controls aren’t the most advanced available, but they’re still pretty decent. You can set a specific motion zone to monitor, decide if it will activate and push an alert when it detects a loud noise, and choose if it will capture footage in HD or standard definition.

Due to the nature of digital technology, there comes a point where a product or software can’t be developed any further and it is no longer possible to provide further support. A slide-out panel offers shortcuts to your account settings and recording library.The night mode was a little more hit and miss. Faces caught with the camera in night-cam mode have a grainy quality and won’t be much help to police unless the thief was insanely close to the Evo – though being fair to Y-Cam, this is true of all the home-monitoring cameras I’ve tested. The Y-cam Plus subscription provides a whole host of additional benefits to help you monitor and secure your home. Y-cam Plus will record 30 days of video activity logs and fully managed 30 days video storage when using Y-cam indoor or outdoor cameras. The HomeMonitor HD is a motion- and sound-sensing camera, which means – apologies for describing the bleeding obvious – that it only starts recording and sending video and audio to the cloud when it senses movement.

While away from the property you would activate both zones and during the night you could activate only the downstairs zone.

Update: This review and its score relate to the original proposition. Y-Cam has since discontinued its free cloud storage subscriptions claiming they are financially “unsustainable”. Moving the wireless router to a different position may help. Try walking around with the router while monitoring the signal strength to get the best signal. As of a more recent update, Y-Cam Evo cameras can now be integrated into the system; when an alarm is triggered, the cameras are set to start recording for up to 15 minutes, or until the siren is deactivated. This requires a Plus subscription.

Motion detection is all well and good, but what if something happens in a few seconds, will the HomeMonitor be able to record that? The people at Y-cam have thought of this and have made a camera that is constantly recording on a 10-second loop. If any movement is detected then the HomeMonitor HD sends the footage directly to the cloud, including a few seconds before the trigger event.
