Our values are what we hold as precious to us. They are a preference or an internal reference point for what we believe is good, right and important. They are like a compass that can keep us on course. They influence our attitudes and behaviour. They guide our approach to life and relationships. They inform our way forward through the many choices we are offered every day, as we react and interact with others and situations. Mostly we act in accordance with our values to maintain a sense of well-being. But often our values are compromised by circumstances or events and we do things that don’t feel right. When we do things that are at odds with our values, we feel uncomfortable. Living in a situation where it is a constant struggle to act according to our values can cause stress, anxiety and depression. Each of the 53 values represented on the cards has been carefully chosen following testing in various settings. The words are deliberately open to individual interpretation to cover the broadest possible range of values within a user-friendly set of cards. We have also included 3 blank cards for any specific values that may arise but are not represented in the set. These should be truly personal; they are the ways of living, behaving, and existing that are vital to the client. Once you have identified your Life Values, consider the Value card and ask yourself e.g. “In what way…?” or “What is it about this…?” For example, if you have chosen “Environment” – ask yourself what is it about the environment that is important to you. Enjoying? Photographing? Conserving? Protecting? How do you do that?Once done, they repeat the exercise, indicating how much fulfillment each value brings to their lives right now (where 1 is “no fulfillment,” and 10 is “total fulfillment”). After they’ve placed the cards in the pond, ask them to “make a wish” about each strength. Values are like a compass that guide your actions. They move you towards your deepest desires for how you truly want to act in life. They are not feelings or guarantees for results. They are choices about the actions you want to make. Awareness and deep knowledge of values can help them reduce complexity in their day-to-day life, while boosting clarity in all they do and what they strive for when overcoming obstacles. The following two worksheets are designed with ACT in mind to help the client identify and clarify their values. Commitment, Obstacles, and Strategies From a therapy perspective, core values can also show up areas of conflict. Sometimes a client’s core values may be in opposition to the therapeutic outcome that they desire, such as a weight loss client whose most important core value is “comfort”. The conflict may arise during their therapy process, as weight loss isn’t always a comfortable process, so learning in advance that there is this potential challenge to the process, means that you can plan ahead to help the client work through being less comfortable during the weight loss process.Once your client has selected three strengths, let them turn each card over and read the definition out loud. After the child has selected three cards, ask them to draw, write, or share an example of when they showed this strength. Ten questions based on their experience throughout their lifespan can help individuals identify their strengths and application to daily life.
