About this deal

As I do each fall, I’m publishing my two-part series of what I consider to be among the best moisturizers for colder weather. That is, face creams ideal for dry, dehydrated skin no matter the skin type. Contrary to commonly held beliefs, even oily skin needs extra moisture during periods of low-humidity. When the air around us is very dry, it drains the water (and the life!) out of our face. When choosing a night cream — really when choosing any skincare product at all — it’s important to consider your skin type and specific needs. Here’s the good news: Almost everyone, even the oiliest of us, can benefit from a boost of hydration and moisture, making a night cream the perfect vehicle for targeted skincare. Still, what works for someone with perpetually dry skin won’t work as well on someone with oily skin, and so on. In terms of a night cream, you’ll want to use your skin type as a guide to help find the right consistency and texture for your needs. When it comes to hydrating moisturizers, First Aid Beauty knows their stuff. This one gets an enthusiastic thumbs up from me.

There’s a concerted debate about whether or not collagen applied to the skin, as with First Aid Beauty’s Ultra Repair Firming Collagen Cream, has any effect the skin’s collagen content. Overnight, skin is in maintenance mode, and you have the time for ingredients to really penetrate into the skin, explains Massachusetts-based board-certified dermatologist Dr. Ranella Hirsch. When it comes to the active ingredients in your night cream, that’s where your particular skin concerns and goals come into play. Maybe you’re dealing with breakouts and post-acne hyperpigmentation, or perhaps your skin has been looking a bit dull and dry. Maybe you have several concerns. What We Love: This lightweight moisturizer provides the right level of hydration and consistency for oilier skin types. By the end of the two-month test, we had barely made a dent in the jar, yet our skin felt nourished and renewed. Our one gripe with the otherwise perfect formula was the slight pilling we experienced when used on top of other products, notably retinol. We created the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval to help you find the very best products for your life. We use our unique methodology to test products in three labs across the country and with our network of home testers to determine their effectiveness, durability, ease of use, and so much more. Based on the results, we rate and recommend products so you can find the right one for your needs.

More From Feelunique

In particular, dehydration is something that’s common to all of us in the cold as the low-humidity air around us draws water through the skin barrier and out of our skin. This process is referred to as trans-epidermal water loss, or TEWL. (More on TEWL in my review of the Skinfix Barrier+ Triple Lipid-Boost 360° Eye Cream below.) What We Love: Our skin looked noticeably hydrated and supple after just one use — and the results last for days. It’s important to look for humectants, emollients, and occlusives in night creams to boost skin hydration and reduce trans-epidermal water loss,” says Dr. Shirazi. “Along with ingredients like hyaluronic acid, glycerin, and colloidal oatmeal, look for products designed to support the skin barrier with ingredients like ceramides, niacinamide, and allantoin.” At First Aid Beauty, we provide everyday essentials and targeted skincare solutions that deliver immediate relief, lasting results and feel-good textures. Our products are formulated with only clean, skin-loving ingredients. We carefully select our ingredients so you don’t have to worry about what’s in (and not in) your skincare products. There are over 1,300 ingredients on FAB’s no-no list, including Artificial Colorants and Artificial Fragrances, Parabens, Ethanol, Ethyl Alcohol, Denatured Alcohol, Methanol, N-Butyl Alcohol, Isopropyl Alcohol, SD Alcohol, Lanolin, Propylene Glycol, Phthalates, Mineral Oil, Petrolatum, Formaldehydes, Oxybenzone, Coal Tar, Hydroquinone, Triclosan, Triclocarban, Talc and Sulfates.”

After testing the Fenty Skin Instant Reset Brightening Overnight Recovery Gel-Cream for several weeks, we were most impressed by its soothing benefits. With lots of nourishing and balancing ingredients — including niacinamide, hyaluronic acid, aloe, and green tea — the formula gives the skin a nice dose of nutrients that, with regular use, noticeably softens and smooths the skin. Cleanse your face, then exfoliate (I only do this 2-3x a week), use a serum, then apply a layer of the First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Collagen Cream. Ultra Repair Cream vs. Ultra Repair Firming Collagen Cream: What’s the Difference?Dehydrated skin" is something we’re asked about frequently. It seems there’s a lot of confusion about what this skin concern is about. A major part of the confusion is that the term "dehydrated skin" is often used interchangeably with "dry skin" or "combination skin" but they are not the same! Dehydrated skin can occur in all skin types and is not exclusive to those with dry skin or combination skin.

Peace Out’s Repairing Moisturizer is formulated specifically for oily and blemish prone skin year-round, but I found it worked great on my own skin throughout much of the year and I’ve been eager to share it. The cream is so hydrating and soothing, in fact, that many people who suffer from eczema swear by it. First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Firming Collagen Cream is a moisturizer that contains—you guessed it—collagen, as well as the soothing colloidal oatmeal that the original is best known for. Upon testing several formulas, we found that the Cetaphil Rich Hydrating Cream is the best night cream for sensitive skin. Not only is this formula fragrance-free, but it also features deeply nourishing vitamin E and hydrating hyaluronic acid, plus vitamin C which adds a nice illuminating effect to the complexion. In addition, it also has a lovely creamy consistency that layers well on top of other skincare products, and it absorbs well into the complexion, too. But we don’t stop there: We also regularly re-review the categories in which we’ve awarded the PEOPLE Tested seal of approval — because the best product of today might not be the best of tomorrow. And by the way, companies can never buy our recommendation: Their products must earn it, fair and square.

Even just a light application makes my skin feel hydrated, bouncy, and firm, and I know with continued use, those benefits will only multiply. What We Love: The super hydrating formula has a cooling sensation upon application, and it doesn’t sting or cause irritation when massaged into extra-dry spots.

What We Don’t Love: That luxurious scent could cause some irritation for those with sensitive skin.

Having classically dry skin is easy to recognize. Dry skin frequently feels tight and dry, with no oil anywhere to be seen. This situation rarely fluctuates; skin feels dry all year long. The dryness might get worse depending on the climate, season, or activity, but regardless of those things, without great skin care products, the uncomfortable dry, tight feeling will persist. While testing this product, we found that it worked some hydrating magic, and when we woke up in the morning, our skin still felt well-nourished and moisturized, which is a total win (especially if using it in the winter months). With all of this in mind, it’s important to note that this night cream is specifically formulated for dry to very dry skin types, so it’s a not recommended for those who experience oily or acne-prone skin.
