Doing so was a means to combat pejorative views of blacks and to engage in racial uplift, but was exclusionary of the black working classes and poor. It was within such an oppressive experience of betrayal that many blacks created a sub-world in which socially stratified privilege was often used for both good and bad purposes. As you alluded to, I presented this talk at Morehouse, which actually had the courage to invite me down, and then even put it up on the Internet. It’s your choice to listen to the words and rhymes I just spat but to all of yous’ who didn’t dismiss the bars that flowed from my lips to your ears will realise that I just spat these bars again as reverse racism.

And at that point, there was actually an incident of sexual assault between a Morehouse student and a Spelman student. Rather than connecting middle-class blacks to other blacks across the class spectrum, black cultural capital is, in this conception, a means of asserting a black racial identity while simultaneously asserting one’s middle-class sensibilities. Black children represent 18% of the nation’s preschool enrollment but make up nearly half of all children with multiple suspensions.
