About this deal

It is an exciting read with an usual tale about a world only partially made by gods, who being satisfied with themselves decide that they do not need to fill the gaps left in the world. The artwork that decorates every page is a joy to behold and Dave McKean excels in bringing something uniquely different with his illustrations in Mouse Bird Snake Wolf but they still contain that Dave McKean magic that all fans are thirsty for. As the children’s ideas take shape, the power of their visions proves to be greater than they, or the gods, could ever have imagined. As the children's ideas take shape, the power of their visions proves to be greater than they, or the gods, could ever have imagined. The narrative alone is a delight to read aloud but the combination of story with illustrations make this work remarkable.

With days spent boasting about their creation and sleeping in the clouds, they leave their creation to fend for itself, parents turning a blind eye for a moments peace – but at what cost? Mouse Bird Snake Wolf is a 2013 graphic novel, written by David Almond and illustrated by David McKean. I would recommend this book because it has good pictures to go along with the story and really let's you see what is going on in the story. You could say that this is Almond and McKean's most beautiful effort yet, but just know that beautiful has its own dark and wondrous meaning in their hands. The story in itself is a wonderfully crafted delight, it’s concept and execution by David Almond is masterful as you would expect, which highlights the impact of the story.

I like little Ben because he was very understandable about doing those things which were not good for him. David Almond’s books are strange, unsettling wild things – unfettered by the normal constraints of children’s literature. David Almond is the author of Skellig, Bone Music, Island, The Savage, The Tightrope Walkers, A Song for Ella Grey, The Dam, The Colour of the Sun, and many other novels, stories, picture books, opera librettos, songs and plays. David Almond’s Mouse Bird Snake Wolf centres around a world that has been created by the gods – heavily influenced by the Greek Gods of myth and legend. This has a good moral and will be a great lesson to those who think they can overpower others as well as a great read! But as the children's ideas grow bolder, the power of their visions proves greater and more dangerous than they, or the gods, could ever have imagined. Publishers Weekly, in a starred review, wrote, "First cousin to Philip Pullman’s imaginings, this contemporary fable about man's power to create and to destroy may be controversial in settings where questioning biblical creation stories is taboo, but where questioning is encouraged, it will challenge and provoke. His first children’s novel, Skellig, the story of a strange, part-human ‘creature’ who transforms the lives of two young children forever, was published to immediate acclaim in 1998. No spoilers, but it built tension wonderfully, and I enjoyed what happened to two of the children, as I think children's fiction can sometimes shy away from fully embracing the consequences of a characters actions.
